Answers:    you can put songs on windows media player, hook up ur ipod and put them on the "sync" register and sync it!

You need to use iTunes, but you don't have to buy music from the iTunes store. I believe you can put any mundane song files onto an iPod using iTunes. It's free to download anyway. You can't. iTunes and iPod's are forever intertwined. Sorry.
